A no-prep art sub plan for middle and high school
Our Teens & Adults Art Sub Plan sets were made for the day an art teacher is out. Each set opens with a one-page plan the substitute can read in two minutes: supplies, a short lesson focus (warm and cool color, light and shadow, depth), step-by-step instructions and an early-finisher option. Students pick a scene and color for the period. Nothing to cut, laminate or prep beyond the copier.
The scenes have layered foreground and background, so there's something to think about: what is closest, where the light comes from, and how color can push a barn or a tree back into the distance. That makes them a fit for grades 6 to 12, an elective, an advisory period or the last class before break.
For adults coloring at home
Plenty of adults just want a cozy page and a cup of tea. The detail is moderate, with clear shapes and a few focal points rather than tiny cells, so a page takes an evening, not a month. Thanksgiving pages are also a calm thing to put out for teens and grown-ups at a family gathering.
Print tips
For the best results:
- Print portrait at 100% on US Letter ('fit to page' on A4).
- Use 65–110 lb cardstock for markers and alcohol markers; regular paper is fine for colored pencils.
- Print in 'best' or 'high' quality so the fine lines stay crisp.
- For a class, print a test page first, then copy.

Is the Thanksgiving coloring page really free?
Yes. The apple orchard page downloads as a PDF with no sign-up. It is a real page from our Harvest Table set.
What grades are the art sub plans for?
They are made for middle and high school (about grades 6 to 12) and work for adults too. The plan page tells a substitute exactly what to do, so no art background is needed.
How detailed are the pages?
Moderately detailed: layered scenes with depth and clear shapes, not tiny mandala cells. Most people finish a page in one to two hours.
What should we color with?
Colored pencils work on regular paper. For markers or gel pens, print on cardstock. All pages are black line art on white, so they print fine in black and white.
Can I copy them for my class?
Yes. Print copies for your own students. Please don't share the PDF with other teachers or upload it to shared drives.
